I started my 3rd attempt of P90X on March 29th, 2012 (read here about my last attempts).
30 days into it, I already...
Summer Lime Salad
(I don’t care if it’s not summer yet, this salad tastes like it!)
J and I finally took the time this weekend to watch a documentary that’s been on our list for months - Forks over Knives. It was an incredibly enlightening view on exactly how the diet decisions we make daily have a longterm impact on our overall health. We both really enjoyed the film and had some pretty major takeaways. If you haven’t seen it, we highly recommend watching it. It’s available to stream via Netflix, and their website has some additional options for viewing.
We both want to make a significant change in our lifestyle and are working on a plan to implement a plant-based, whole foods diet. If the past year has taught us anything about jumpstarting a change, we know that we need a plan. Random and impulsive decisions don’t have much longevity and are the perfect storm of imminent failure. The past few days have been about absorbing as much research as possible to make truly mindful decisions about what is best for us as a family.
So no, I haven’t ravaged our pantry and freezer throwing away anything and everything that contains animals :)
We’re taking small steps and adding vegan components to our diet while slowly removing animal-based foods. Today we’re starting the first phase of our journey. I’ll take some time this week to share our long-term (continually revised) plan with you all.
I really want to start focusing on preparing healthier meals for J and I. I found this great site that has a plan for introducing organics into your diet! Another goal of mine is to start adding more vegetarian recipes to my repertoire. Does anybody have any favorites that they’d like to share?
Anybody out there using My Fitness Pal?
Friend me (jro64217) and we can hold each other accountable! It’s a win-win!
Well folks, it’s that time of year again. The time to think about the year ahead and set goals and aspirations for ourselves. The time when no promises have been broken and we all get to start fresh. People across the globe set expectations for themselves for the upcoming year, and it turns out many of us identify the same areas for improvement within ourselves. Check out this list of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions. Unfortunately, the majority of resolutions are broken by February. FEBRUARY. Really?! Well not this year.
I have to admit, I’ve never really given much thought to New Year’s Resolutions, but this year I’m committing. Hopefully by broadcasting my goals to the web, you all will hold me accountable…
Joanna’s 2012 New Year’s Resolutions:
Mind
Body
Soul
And there you have it! If I’m able to keep even 1/2 of these resolutions (don’t worry, I’m aiming much, MUCH higher), 2012 is bound to be a top-notch year. Not to mention I’m getting married to an amazing guy!!!!! So what are you looking forward to in 2012? What are you going to create on your clean slate?
I have another great app to share. You know how most diets suggest you track what you eat, well My Fitness Pal makes this daunting task super simple.

You set your daily caloric intake goal, enter in all of the food and beverage you consume throughout the day, add in any exercise you complete, and submit before you go to bed. You can also set it up so it tracks your weight week to week.
Entering in your food journal could not be easier. There is a bar code scanning feature that allows you to scan the food packaging and then appropriately adjust your serving size. If you don’t have a bar code to scan, just type in what you ate and it will bring up tons of different options to choose from. This little app is seriously smart - remember those McCormicks recipes I was raving about? It found the nutritional info for the same exact meal! It even has a HUGE database of restaurant dishes, so there’s no excuse to leave out those pesky meals.

The tracking on this app is super cool. It shows your nutritional breakdown for the day, week, month, etc. You can also see trends in how you’re eating and how it’s affecting your weight over time. One of my favorite features is when you submit your journal for the day, you get a quick message about how you’ve done. Depending on how well or poorly I behaved that day, it says something along the lines of, “If you ate this way every day, you would loose 3 pounds in the next 30 days.” It’s a good reality check on how my daily food decisions will affect me long-term.

I could go on and on about the neat features of this app, but you really should just try it yourself. For those of you without a smart phone, there is a browser version as well that you can use from your computer.
Hope you enjoy my latest love as much as I do!
